In the world of energy transition, some of the most vital components work behind the scenes, much like the backstage crew in a theatre production. That’s the concept we brought to life in our latest project for Orbis, Through Our Lens: The Unsung Heroes of the Energy System.
We’re delighted to share that this piece has been awarded Best Storytelling in Any Medium at the Citywire Engage and Goldmine Awards!
Here’s a closer look at how this award-winning project came together.
The idea was to use the metaphor of a theatre production to tell the story of the energy transition, highlighting how the power grid and its supporting infrastructure act as the unsung heroes working tirelessly behind the scenes.
While electric vehicles, solar panels, and wind turbines often take centre stage, the supporting "cast"—the grid, transformers, and energy storage solutions—are just as critical to the show. By using the workings of a theatre, from the backstage crew to the dazzling performances under the lights, we aimed to tell this story in a fresh and engaging way.
With just one day to shoot, meticulous planning was essential. The project involved a presenter, four dancers, and six backstage crew members, all featured in choreographed scenes with numerous moving parts. We carefully mapped out every moment in the storyboard phase to ensure the energy of the concept would translate seamlessly on screen.
The shoot took place at the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline, a venue that provided the perfect backdrop for our story. From the glow of the dressing room mirrors to the ropes and pulleys backstage, every detail reinforced the metaphor.
It was an action-packed day, with dancers performing on stage, backstage crew pulling ropes and adjusting lights, and our presenter tying it all together. Thanks to a fantastic team effort, every moment went off without a hitch, and the energy of the day is palpable in the final film.
We’re incredibly proud that The Unsung Heroes of the Energy System has been recognised with the Best Storytelling in Any Medium award at the Citywire Engage and Goldmine Awards.
The judges praised the piece for its originality and creativity, and it’s a testament to the collaboration between Orbis and our team at Arms & Legs. It’s always rewarding when a shared vision comes to life, and this project was a fantastic example of pushing creative boundaries together.
For us, it’s the process as much as the product that makes a project special. From initial storyboarding to seeing the finished piece on screen, this journey has been an inspiring one.
We’re deeply grateful to Orbis for trusting us with this concept and for working so collaboratively to bring it to fruition. And, of course, a huge thank you to the incredible cast, crew, and the Alhambra Theatre for helping make it all happen.
