The Brief

MiAlgae is a pioneering biotech company addressing the growing environmental challenge of overfishing for omega-3 oils. Omega-3 oils are essential nutrients for both human and animal health, but the current method of sourcing these oils—primarily from wild fish—has severe ecological consequences. MiAlgae offers a sustainable alternative by producing NaturAlgae, a nutrient-rich microalgae that can be used in animal feed, particularly for aquaculture and pets, reducing the need for wild-caught fish.

By leveraging co-products from the whisky distillation process, MiAlgae has created a circular economy model that turns waste into value. The company's technology repurposes wastewater and pot ale from whisky distilleries as feedstock for algae cultivation, providing an innovative, eco-friendly way to produce omega-3 oils. This not only alleviates pressure on marine ecosystems but also contributes to significant reductions in CO2 emissions and water waste.

The purpose of this project was to communicate MiAlgae's innovative approach, technological advancements, and their commitment to environmental sustainability. The video needed to clearly explain the environmental problem, introduce MiAlgae’s solution, and highlight their broader mission of reducing humanity's impact on the planet.

Our Approach

Script Development:
The core message revolved around the unsustainable sourcing of omega-3 oils from wild-caught fish and MiAlgae’s solution to this problem. We collaborated closely with MiAlgae’s team to craft a script that conveyed the importance of their mission, focusing on key messages:

  • The overfishing crisis and its impact on fish stocks and aquaculture.
  • The innovative use of microalgae to produce omega-3 oils.
  • The partnership with the whisky industry to recycle waste products and create a more sustainable production model.
  • MiAlgae’s broader vision of biotechnology for good, focusing on improving food security and reducing environmental impact.

Interviews:
We conducted interviews with key stakeholders, including MiAlgae’s founder, Douglas Martin, who shared the origin story of the company, its mission, and the future vision. These personal insights helped to humanise the brand, portraying MiAlgae as a purpose-driven company with a clear goal to create positive change.

Stock Footage and B-Roll:
To visually represent the environmental problem and MiAlgae’s innovative solution, we utilised stock footage showing:

  • Marine ecosystems and the global issue of overfishing.
  • The whisky distillation process to highlight the sustainable partnership.
  • Microalgae production and its transformation into animal feed.
    These visuals reinforced the script’s key points and gave the audience a clear understanding of the broader context.

Motion Graphics:
Custom motion graphics were designed to visually break down complex processes, such as:

  • The overfishing problem.
  • The biotechnology process used by MiAlgae.
  • The benefits of using algae as a sustainable source of omega-3s.These graphics helped simplify technical concepts and kept the viewer engaged while clearly communicating the science behind MiAlgae’s innovation.

The final video successfully communicated MiAlgae’s mission and innovative approach. It highlighted their role in the sustainable production of omega-3 oils, positioning the company as a forward-thinking biotech innovator. The video was used by MiAlgae for investor presentations, on their website, and across social media platforms to raise awareness about their solution to the environmental challenges posed by the fishing industry.
